MLAs briefed on urgent economic requirements

Business leaders in Northern Ireland have told Assembly members that providing good public services and building a quality infrastructure can be achieved only through a stronger private sector.

In a series of briefings to MLAs at Stormont today, the Institute of Directors urged them to speed up decision-making on key economic issues.

Joanne Stuart, Chairman of IoD Northern Ireland, said: “The fundamental challenge remains a rebalancing of the economy to reverse the unsustainable 60:40 ratio be… Continue

Late Payments Killing SME’s?

This morning ISME made as statement that late payment were killing SME’s with an average of 73 days to have their bills paid. Also a recent IoD Scotland paper identified the problem that while many large companies are benefiting from the government [and NI executive] pledge to pay all contractors within 10 days, this not being extended too many smaller businesses further down the supply chain. Current arrangements do not require the prime contractor to pay subcontractors in the same time frame.… Continue

Michael, Thanks for the comment and I agree completely that energy efficency is a much better way to spend money. Dealing with fuel poverty will need us to look also at the development of 'Social Tariffs' or in respect of water they refer to them as 'affordability tariffs'. One of the points I was trying to make was when we are providing a finacial subsidy i.e. the Winter Fuel Allowance it should not be a cash give away and if it is intended to support energy costs, which is the case with WFA then providing it as a credit for which a discount is competed out is a better way to use out tax-£s. You have no idea (my assupmtion) how difficult it is to get this concept accepted as it breaks Parity with the rest of the UK - what a licence for bureaucracy to ensure no change!

Michael, check out the blog on the SCRIP for NI. This could be one of those ideas we are looking for! Worth further debate, and certainly something different. Joanne
