Now that I have left the advertising agency world (plug here - new business called Navajotalk getting up and running), I recommend the process that is used by the world wide agency group TBWA, which is called Disruption.
Disruption is not negative, despite the way it sounds, it is a method of challenging conventions by rejecting the concept 'we've always done it that way'. It is a system that allows you see clearly that there are huge opportunities, no matter what sector you are in.
Apple use it. The convention for mobile phone companies is to produce hundreds of variations of phone. The consumer was confused, and used very few of the features on the phones. So what did Apple do? They produced one phone, and allowed their customers to decide what they wanted it to do by downloading apps from the totally new App Store. Now all the other manufacturers are chasing them by copying them.
Northern Ireland is hidebound by doing things the way they have always been done. All the thinking is designed to get to where others already are. We need to look for a place where no one else is, get there and lead the way. Can we do it? The people in the North of Ireland were there 100 years ago when we were world leaders, so why not?
But it takes a serious change of attitude! We need to stop being hidebound by constitutional, communications, and business conventions.
If we take all the advantages we have, then we can get there. Our country is small, but funded by a major world economy. We are in a unique position and still have a lot of genuine goodwill coming our way, if only we thought about how to use it. We are on the Emerald Isle, and the rest of the world is talking green. Our natural resources don't need to be dug up, they are the weather that we complain about all the time. If we started with a blank sheet of paper, we could create a place that would surprise and inspire the rest of the world. Yes it is ambitious, but that is what disruptive thinking is all about.
I recommend Disruption, by Jean-Marie Dru, it is good for any business and a good read too! It is available on Amazon.
